Have fun in the sun while also getting a work out? Um, yes, please! “The sport of stand-up paddleboarding is on fire,” says fitness enthusiast Jessie Benson, above. Benson, who quit her day job last year to focus on teaching fitness full time has created a program called FloYo. “FloYo is basically a fusion of yoga and Pilates taught on a stand-up paddleboard, focusing on core stability,” she explains. While her main headquarters is located at Capital SUP in Annapolis, Benson hopes to grow FloYo internationally through her teaching and training program. “I branded my class that I teach on the paddleboard so that it can be replicated in any body of water.” Whether taking regular FloYo (more yoga-like) or FloYo Fit (more athletically based), the actual sport of paddleboarding is a focus, too. “Something that differentiates FloYo from other stand-up paddleboard classes is that we really focus on paddling, making sure that every student leaves feeling confident in their paddling skills.” And, yes, while in tree pose you may slip into the water, but Benson assures us that it’s not so bad. “People have a fear of falling into the water, but once they fall in, they are more willing to try different poses. Something flips in their head: ‘Now that I’ve fallen in, I can be more daring.’”
FloYo® is partnering with one of Africa’s premier water sports companies, Tribe Watersports, to offer SUP Yoga classes on the coast of Kenya. Located on the powder white sands and crystal clear waters of one of the world’s top 10 beaches on the Indian Ocean, Tribe Watersports are the exports when it comes to kite surfing, SUP, kayaking and wind surfing.
This April Tribe will be offering several FloYo® classes to locals and tourists in Watamu, Kenya. Tribe Watersports operates out of luxury resort, Medina Palms and is situated within paddling distant to the Watamu Marine National Park. Tribe was recently featured on CNN’s Inside Africa which highlights Watamu as one of the most spectacular water sports destinations in the world. Check the video out here!

You’ve seen the photos in the gossip magazines; everyone from Taylor Swift to Robert Pattinson seems to have taken up standup paddle boarding as their newest fitness addiction. But, you don’t have to be a celebrity vacationing on a tropical island to get the hottest new workout that is keeping Hollywood’s best bodies in top shape. FloYo® is a fusion of yoga and Pilates taught on a standup paddleboard (SUP). The class blends the fundamentals of each discipline to create a challenging core workout leading to a stronger physique and chiseled core. FloYo can be taught on virtually any body of water from flowing rivers to quiet creeks and even swimming pools!taylorswift SUP
If you have mastered your downward facing dog and sun salutations on the mat, you will be pleasantly surprised by the challenge of trying these same poses on the unstable surface of a SUP. Because the poses are being performed on a moving surface, you will engage muscles that you would not engage in a traditional yoga class. The poses have to be aligned perfectly for even weight distribution on the boards meaning you will not only be benefiting from a challenging class but you will also be improving your overall core strength. Plus, you will notice a change in your in-studio yoga practice as you focus more on balance and engaging your core as you flow through a class.
In addition to being one of the hottest new workouts and an intense core challenge, FloYo provides as escape from your daily routine, it offers an opportunity to get away from your typical gym workout by taking you out on the water. FloYo is also one of the best ways to connect your mind and body. Just one class will add a whole new element of intense focus and single pointed concentration to your workout. When on a SUP you are forced to be in the present moment because the second your mind wanders you will be off the board and in the water!
FloYo offers an opportunity for you to get outside and enjoy your natural surroundings. In a typical FloYo session the only noise you will hear is the occasional heron flying overhead or fish splashing in the water below you. Every class ends with a 5 minute savasana where participants get to simply relax on their boards and embrace the warmth of the sun above them and the gentle flow of the water below them. This total relaxation will be unlike anything you have ever experienced in the confines of the studio!
Come try the hottest new water sport and workout all in one at our ECA/Thrive Conference. Introductory FloYo sessions will be offered throughout the weekend as well as 2 Master FloYo classes on the ocean at sunrise and sunset!
